Kazakhstan has collected 8 billion tenge in taxes from Pinduoduo and Anthropic for previous tax periods. Authorities have also restricted access to Farfetch after its UK-registered operator failed to comply with tax obligations under the country’s rules for foreign online platforms.

Kazakhstan has collected KZT 8 billion in taxes from two foreign technology companies. The State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance announced the payments on 19 October 2026.

Payments from Pinduoduo and Anthropic

Pinduoduo paid KZT 6.8 billion. Anthropic PBC, the developer of the Claude AI assistant, transferred KZT 1.2 billion. The payment covers previous tax periods. Anthropic made it after the committee sent notices based on the company’s own internal audit.

Farfetch loses access

The committee also sent a notice to the UK-registered operator of the Farfetch platform after a desk audit. The operator did not comply, so the authorities restricted access to the site in Kazakhstan. Farfetch sells clothing, footwear and accessories, including well-known brands.

The law allows this step for foreign platforms that fail to meet their tax obligations. The committee says it applies the same procedure to every foreign platform that meets the conditions and does not fulfil its duties to the Kazakh budget.

The rules behind the payments

Under the New Tax Code, foreign companies that sell goods or services through online platforms must register for VAT under conditional registration, according to RegFollower. Their VAT liability starts on the date the buyer makes the first payment. Companies already registered for VAT do not need to register again. The rules took effect on 1 January 2026.
