Bangladesh and Turkmenistan agreed to work towards concluding a tax treaty and an investment protection agreement (IPA) during political consultations held in Ashgabat on 15 August 2026 to strengthen bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation.

The discussions covered a proposed “Program of Action: 2027-2029”, including cooperation on avoidance of double taxation, promotion and protection of investments, trade, industry and tourism. Both countries also explored opportunities in pharmaceuticals, textiles, energy, agriculture and petrochemicals, alongside greater private-sector engagement.

The consultations were led by Ambassador Dr. M. Nazrul Islam, Secretary, Bilateral (East & West), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, and Ahmet Gurbanov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. Both sides agreed to hold the next round of consultations in Dhaka at a mutually convenient time.

If an agreement is reached, it will have to be signed and ratified in both jurisdictions before entering into force.
