Kyrgyzstan's parliament has ratified a new income tax treaty with Japan, replacing a 40-year-old agreement inherited from the Soviet era and strengthening modern tax cooperation between the two nations.

Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has given its approval to ratify a tax agreement with Japan that will modernise bilateral tax relations between the two countries.

On 14 May 2026, lawmakers reviewed and passed the draft ratification law in its first reading. The parliament completed the ratification process on 20 May 2026, approving the Income Tax Treaty that was originally signed in Tokyo on 19 December 2025.

The new agreement focuses on eliminating double taxation on income and establishing measures to prevent tax evasion and avoidance.

Once the treaty enters into force, it will replace the outdated USSR-Japan Income Tax Treaty from 1986 that currently governs tax matters between the two nations.
