Senior officials from Hong Kong and Laos have launched discussions on establishing a tax treaty, with formal negotiations scheduled to begin later this month as both sides seek to enhance bilateral economic ties.
Hong Kong’s Financial Services Secretary Christopher Hui met with Laos Finance Minister Santiphab Phomvihane on 11 March 2026 to finalise a double taxation treaty, according to a press release.
The first round of discussions will commence on 23 March.
During the meeting, Hui expressed appreciation to Phomvihane for backing the Comprehensive Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement (CDTA) negotiations and voiced optimism that the agreement could be finalised promptly to strengthen cross-border commerce and investment flows.
Any resulting agreement will need to be finalised, signed, and ratified before it can enter into force.
