The UK has declared a new tax relief for married couples. From April 2015 one spouse will be able to transfer up to GBP 1,000 of the unused personal tax allowance to the other spouse. This relief will be open to married couples and civil partners.

However the option to transfer part of the allowance will only be available if one spouse or civil partner is paying income tax at the basic rate of 20% and the other has unused personal allowance. This means that the maximum benefit from this relief will be GBP 200 per year. More details of the relief are expected to be announced in due course.
