Korea (Rep.) will introduce taxes on digital assets in 2029, two years later than planned, as the government cites the timing of information exchanges with the US and pending legislation on the sector.
Korea (Rep.)’s Finance Ministry announced on 5 November 2026 that it would postpone the introduction of taxes on digital assets by two years, moving the start date to 2029.
In a statement, the ministry said the government would consult parliament on the postponement and prepare the tax systems needed for implementation in 2029.
The ministry said the delay reflects the timeline for information exchanges with the US on virtual assets, which are due to begin in 2029. It said that introducing the taxes next year, as previously planned, could put the domestic market at a disadvantage compared with global markets.
The ministry also said Korea (Rep.) is working on legislation on digital assets that could change the market environment in the coming years.
During the two-year period, the government will prepare measures to tax overseas trading of digital assets. It said it would take into account the sector’s high volatility, investor protection and support for industry growth.
The government plans to submit legislative amendments to parliament in 2027. It will disclose details of the specific tax codes to investors in the first half of 2028.
The revised timetable gives the government and the market additional time to prepare before taxation begins in 2029.
