Japan and Mongolia, on 3 September 2026, agreed to advance discussions towards the conclusion of a bilateral income tax treaty during a foreign ministers’ meeting in Ulaanbaatar.
The ministers agreed to use the Japan-Mongolia Government and Business Sector Joint Committee, scheduled for November, to deepen economic cooperation.
The discussions formed part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral economic relations, with both sides agreeing to further advance work towards concluding the bilateral tax convention. The ministers also reaffirmed cooperation on the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” and agreed to expand dialogue in areas including security and Artificial Intelligence.
Japan and Mongolia also welcomed substantial agreement on the expansion of Chinggis Khaan International Airport through yen loans and agreed to continue cooperation under the “Partnership on Wide Energy and Resources Resilience Asia (POWERR Asia)”.
If an agreement is reached, it must be finalised, signed and ratified in both jurisdictions before it can enter into force.
