Greece’s AADE found receipt, VAT and payment-related violations on 12 tourist vessels during targeted inspections in Santorini.

Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) has identified tax violations on 12 of 26 tourist vessels inspected in Santorini, representing a 46% violation rate, during a targeted tax inspection operation.

The operation, named “I’ll Take You on a Cruise 2026”, used information and analysis generated by an algorithm based on available tax and statistical data.

AADE auditors carried out surprise inspections at Vlychada port and other locations where tourist vessels dock in Santorini, as day boats and catamarans returned from daytime and afternoon cruises.

Inspections focus on tax compliance

The inspections examined:

  • Issuing the required receipts
  • Correct application of VAT rates
  • The method of settling transactions
  • Maintaining and presenting the required supporting documents and records

The violations included failure to issue receipts or inaccurate issuance of receipts, failure to present or refusal to provide the required supporting documents and records, receiving cash payments of more than EUR 500, and applying a lower VAT rate than the applicable rate.

EUR 92,000 linked to violations

The total value associated with the identified violations was EUR 92,000, while fines of EUR 43,000 were imposed.

The investigation of the offending businesses is continuing in depth, with further use and cross-checking of available tax data and, where required, extension to previous unaudited tax periods.
