The National Bank of Kazakhstan has lowered its base interest rate by 0.5%, a change that also alters the rate of late payment interest on overdue taxes.
Kazakhstan’s central bank, the National Bank of Kazakhstan (NBK), has reduced its base interest rate from 16.25 %to 15.75% . It announced the decision on 23 October 2026.
The base interest rate is used to determine late payment interest on overdue taxes. The interest is calculated at 1.25 times the base rate, divided by 365 to give the daily rate. Using the new base rate, this works out at an annual equivalent of 19.6875%, compared with 20.3125 %at the previous rate.
The latest reduction is the second this autumn. The NBK earlier cut the base rate from 16.75 %to 16.25% effective from 7 September 2026.
The two cuts together lower the rate by 1%. Taxpayers with overdue liabilities in Kazakhstan should confirm which rate applies to the period in question, as late payment interest is tied directly to the base rate in force.
According to the NBK press release, the new rate takes effect from 26 October 2026.
