Vietnam and the Solomon Islands held high-level negotiations to advance a bilateral treaty and expand cooperation in trade, investment, and key sectors.
Vietnam’s Central Party Secretary and Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung held negotiations with Solomon Islands Foreign and External Trade Minister Peter Shanel Agovaka during the latter’s official visit to Vietnam from 11–13 November, marking the first visit by a Solomon Islands Foreign Minister in nearly 30 years.
The talks focused on advancing a bilateral treaty framework and strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, construction, and human resource development. Both sides discussed facilitating Vietnamese business operations in Solomon waters, expanding Solomon’s imports of key Vietnamese products, and encouraging Vietnamese investment in infrastructure, mining, and renewable energy.
The ministers also negotiated agreements to advance visa exemptions for diplomatic and official passport holders, as well as frameworks for investment protection and double taxation avoidance. They reaffirmed the importance of multilateral cooperation through the UN, ASEAN, and the Pacific Islands Forum, while committing to regional stability, peace, and freedom of navigation under international law, including UNCLOS 1982.
