US President Donald Trump has agreed on Monday, 3 February 2025, to halt tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days – which was set to take effect Tuesday, 4 February 2025 – after both countries pledged to step up efforts to stop illicit drugs and migrants from crossing into the US.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged to send 10,000 National Guard troops to the border to block fentanyl and other drugs from entering the US. In exchange, the US would work to curb the trafficking of firearms into Mexico.
Meanwhile, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has requested Trump to postpone the tariffs after an agreement to a border plan, which includes stationing nearly 10,000 frontline workers, appointing a “fentanyl czar,” and other initiatives.
“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30-day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. Fairness For All!” Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social.
President Trump is also reportedly seeking a deal with China to pause additional tariffs, though no deal has been reached yet.
Earlier, President Trump signed an executive order on 30 January 2025, imposing a 25% border tax or tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico. The Trump administration also imposed a 10% tariff on imports from China.
The move had sparked retaliatory measures from the affected countries, raising the risk of trade wars.
