Taiwan’s Southern Region National Taxation Bureau has clarified that sales of virtual assets and stablecoins defined under the Virtual Asset Service Act are exempt from business tax, while related service fees and non-fungible token (NFT) transactions remain taxable.

Taiwan’s Southern Region National Taxation Bureau clarified, on 14 October 2026, that business entities selling virtual assets, including Bitcoin and Ether, and stablecoins are exempt from business tax. The exemption applies to assets defined under Subparagraphs 1 and 6 of Article 3 of the Virtual Asset Service Act, following a Ministry of Finance ruling issued on 3 September 2026.

The Bureau explained that these assets serve payment or investment purposes and do not possess a consumptive nature under the Value-Added and Non-Value-Added Business Tax Act. However, fees charged by virtual asset service providers for exchange and related services remain subject to business tax.

NFT sales and exchanges involving NFTs for goods or services are also taxable because NFTs are not classified as virtual assets under the Act.

Under Article 48-1 of the Tax Collection Act, taxpayers who voluntarily report underpaid tax and pay the evaded amount plus interest before being reported or investigated by the relevant authorities may avoid penalties.
