Sri Lanka’s Parliament has advanced its scrutiny of the 2026 Budget, with lawmakers completing debates on several key ministry allocations. The Committee Stage, spanning 17 days, is moving toward a final vote on the Appropriation Bill following the Budget Speech delivered earlier this month.

Sri Lanka’s Parliament progressed through the Committee Stage Debate of the 2026 Budget this week, with the 10th and 11th days of the 17-day proceedings addressing several key ministry allocations under the Appropriation Bill.

On 26 November 2025, the 10th day of the debate, MPs considered the expenditure heads of the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Digital Economy.

All three were debated and subsequently passed with amendments, without a vote.

This followed the passage—also without a vote—of the budget heads of the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education on the previous day.

The Committee reconvened today, 27 November, for the 11th day of deliberations, with attention now turning to the Budget heads of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, which are currently being debated.

Parliament will continue examining ministry-level expenditure across the remaining days of the Committee Stage before the final vote on the 2026 Appropriation Bill.
