Nigeria and Portugal are negotiating their first income tax treaty, with both sides establishing a Joint Commission to advance the agreement alongside cooperation on trade, renewable energy, and maritime security.
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation announced on 17 July 2026 that officials from Nigeria and Portugal discussed bilateral relations, including progress toward concluding an income tax treaty, during the EurAfrican Forum held in Cascais, Portugal, from 15 to 16 July 2026.
Both parties identified several areas for immediate action: trade and investment deals, renewable energy projects, and maritime security arrangements. Defence cooperation and digital innovation also featured prominently. Both sides committed to establishing a Nigeria-Portugal Joint Commission to formalise political consultations and track progress on outstanding agreements.
If concluded, it would be the first income tax treaty between the two countries and would need to be finalised, signed, and ratified before entering into force.
