Malta and Moldova signed a double taxation agreement (DTA) on 10 April 2014. This is the first DTA signed between these two countries, in an effort to increase trade between them and boost investment on both sides. Malta joined the EU in 2004 and can give assistance to Moldova in certain areas including IT, tourism and education as a result of its own experience of aligning its policies with those of the EU.

The agreement conforms to the EU policy of encouraging further integration with Moldova and Georgia, and is likely to be followed by the signature by Moldova of a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA) with the EU in June 2014.
