Japan and Laos officials met to advance negotiations on their first bilateral income tax treaty.
Officials from Japan and Laos convened on 29 May 2025 to strengthen diplomatic ties and move forward with plans to establish a bilateral income tax treaty.
During a visit, President Thongloun Sisoulith and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed to strengthen the partnership between Laos and Japan, coinciding with celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations and 60 years of Japanese volunteer efforts in Laos this year.
The two leaders exchanged views on advancing the bilateral relationship under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They also concurred in promoting efforts toward the early conclusion of a tax convention, which would further enhance investment and economic exchanges between the two countries.
The treaty will become effective once both parties have exchanged their ratification documents.
