The Indian Government has requested that tax officials act as “facilitators” rather than “administrators,” and ensure that the taxation system is as taxpayer friendly as possible. The Finance Minister has suggested that procedures should be simplified and made more transparent and has urged Customs and Excise staff to interact with stakeholders on a frequent basis. The payment of tax should become a “status symbol,” in order to encourage greater compliance.
