On 7 February 2024, the Ministry of Finance in Ghana released a press statement regarding enforcing Value-Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption by residential customers. According to the statement, electricity suppliers were informed of the government’s plan to impose VAT on electricity consumption by residential customers. The VAT at a rate of 15% will be imposed from January 2024 for electricity consumption above a certain threshold. But, supplies under this threshold would remain exempt. However, the planned implementation of VAT has been suspended temporarily after consultations with key stakeholders, including labor unions.
