The EU-Ukraine Deep Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement came into effect from 1 January 2016. On trade related matters the objective of the agreement is to progressively establish a free trade area within a transitional period of ten years from the date of entry into force.

Goods originating in Ukraine and imported to the EU and goods originating in the EU and imported to Ukraine may be eligible for preference if the necessary conditions are satisfied. On certain categories of goods duty is immediately reduced to zero. On other categories of goods duty is to be reduced to zero over four years, six years or eight years.

Five years after the date of entry into force the parties may consult one another to consider accelerating and broadening the scope of the elimination of customs duties.
