To take full benefit from the large number of visitors to the country this year, Brazil is to increase taxes on certain categories of drink such as beer, energy drinks and some fruit juice before the beginning of the soccer World Cup which is to be held in June and July 2014. The average tax increase will be around 1.5 percent, and the Brazilian government hopes that this will raise around BRL200m (USD88m) in extra government revenue in 2014. If the whole increase in price is passed on to the consumers the price of the drinks will on average increase by around 0.4 percent. Mineral water and soda will remain exempt from the tax.
