NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan says 1.5 - 1.6 million personal income tax (PIT) returns are still pending as monitors submissions for a possible deadline review.

Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan has hinted that the deadline for submitting online income tax returns could be extended as a large portion of registered taxpayers have not yet filed digitally.

He said the NBR would monitor submission trends before making any decision.

“When we see that a large percentage of registered taxpayers have submitted their returns, we will understand that most of the work has been completed. At this stage, we believe around another 15 lakh taxpayers will submit their returns online,” he stated.

“If necessary, the government may consider the matter later. We will make a decision after discussing it with the high ups (finance adviser),” he added.

Chairman Khan noted that approximately 4.2 million taxpayers are registered for online filing, with over 2.6 million having already submitted their returns.

“This means around 1.5 to 1.6 million returns are still pending. Receiving all of them within the next week may be difficult, especially as new registrations continue every day. On average, more than 15,000 taxpayers register daily for e-return submission,” he explained.

Earlier, NBR announced a one-month extension for filing income tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year. Under a special order issued on 19 November 2025. Individual taxpayers have until 31 December 2025 to submit their returns. The original PIT  return deadline was 30 November.
