Sri Lanka's Inland Revenue Department has issued a notice setting out how taxes can be paid, and has warned that interest and penalty will apply to non-payment or late payment, with no waiver or reduction of interest.

Sri Lanka’s Inland Revenue Department has issued a notice to taxpayers on the methods for paying taxes. It says interest and penalties will be imposed on non-payment or late payment, and that interest will not be waived or reduced.

According to the notice, all tax payments can be made through the Online Tax Payment Platform. Details of the bank branches where the platform is available, and other related matters, can be found on the department’s website, which also hosts a user guide for the platform.

Taxpayers who prefer to pay at a bank branch have two options. Withholding tax payments can be made at any branch of People’s Bank, while payments for all other tax types can be made at any branch of the Bank of Ceylon.

The department said pre-printed paying-in-slips are not sent to individual taxpayers by post. Those who need one can obtain it from the nearest Bank of Ceylon branch.

A Document Identification Number is required to make an accurate payment through a bank branch. Taxpayers can obtain it through the department’s e-services portal or by calling 0112134780. The number must be entered in the “Payment Voucher Number” field on the paying-in slip.
