The Bangladesh government will shift to an April-March fiscal year from FY 2028-29, with a nine-month transition year in FY 2027-28, to reduce monsoon-related delays in infrastructure projects.

The Bangladesh government has approved a change in the national fiscal year, moving the cycle from the existing July-June period to April-March from FY 2028-29. The decision was approved at the 17th cabinet meeting on 17 August 2026, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The FY 2027-28 will be treated as a transitional period and will cover nine months, from July 2027 to March 2028.

According to the Cabinet Division, the revised fiscal calendar is intended to improve the timing of infrastructure development. Under the current July-June cycle, major development work continues during July and August, when heavy monsoon rains can delay projects, affect construction quality and cause disruption for the public.

The government expects an April-March fiscal year to allow more infrastructure work to be completed before the monsoon season.
