India’s Commerce Ministry and NITI Aayog considered relaxing certain tariff and non-tariff restrictions on Chinese imports to secure cheaper raw materials and support industrial growth.

India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, supported by NITI Aayog, is considering easing certain tariff and non-tariff restrictions on imports from China, according to government officials cited on 17 October 2025.

The proposal reflects India’s increasing dependence on Chinese raw materials to sustain industrial output and export growth.

Officials are reportedly evaluating options such as allowing some anti-dumping duties to expire and reducing tariffs on key inputs used in industries including leather and engineering goods, where local production remains insufficient.

The move comes as New Delhi seeks to balance trade ties with the US and China. The US recently raised tariffs on imports from India, while China earlier this year restricted exports of essential goods such as fertilisers to India.
