According to a Financial Times report on 20 May 2025, the EU is considering imposing a flat fee on small packages entering the bloc, mainly from China.

The Financial Times reported that the European Commission shared a draft proposal for a handling fee on Monday after pressure from member states whose customs authorities are overwhelmed by the 4.6 billion items imported from China annually. The proposal has not set a definitive fee, but according to sources, it is expected to be around EUR 2.

China responded to these EU plans and stated that the EU would honor its commitment to ensure a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies.

To address unfair trade practices, the EU implemented anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on nearly 80 Chinese products, ranging from biodiesel imports to ironing boards to bicycles.

Recently, on 29 April 2025, the European Commission imposed duties of up to 66.7% on imports of Chinese construction lifts.

In response, China imposed anti-dumping duties on POM copolymer imports from multiple countries, including the EU, on 18 May 2025.
