Japan’s lower house of parliament ( House of Representatives) approved the new income tax treaty with Turkmenistan on 10 April 2025.
Earlier, the Japanese Cabinet approved a new income tax treaty with Turkmenistan on 25 January 2025.
Japan and Turkmenistan signed the tax treaty “Convention between Japan and Turkmenistan for the Elimination of Double Taxation with respect to Taxes on Income and the Prevention of Tax Evasion and Avoidance” in Ashgabat on 16 December 2024.
The treaty will enter into force 30 days after the exchange of ratification instruments and will apply from 1 January of the year following its entry into force. Once effective, it will replace the 1986 tax treaty between Japan and the former Soviet Union, as it applies to Japan and Turkmenistan.
