A member of the relevant Senate Committee has welcomed the European parliament’s recommendation to extend to 2017 the moratorium on aviation emission taxes on international flights entering or leaving the EU. Various countries outside the EU have objected to the emissions trading scheme in the EU and its likely effect on their air carriers, and the EU therefore decided in November 2012 to postpone the international provisions of the scheme. The extension to 2017 reflects continuing opposition from outside the EU.
The US has already approved the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act (EUETSPA) which prohibits US airlines from carrying out the terms of the ETS scheme at any time. This aimed to protect US airlines and passengers from any effects resulting from the ETS.
