US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the planned 100% tariffs on Chinese exports, scheduled for November 1 or earlier, depend on China’s actions.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated on 14 October 2025 that the implementation of additional 100% tariffs on Chinese exports to the US, set for November 1 or earlier, is contingent on China’s actions.
Greer said that they believe they will be able to work through the situation, but emphasised that it cannot continue under a regime in which China seeks veto power over the world’s high-tech supply chains. He thinks China has realised it has overstepped.
However, Greer acknowledged that China might struggle to find a way to de-escalate the situation. Speaking to CNBC, Greer mentioned that US and Chinese officials held staff-level discussions in Washington on Monday, 13 October, leaving some hope for resolving the ongoing dispute over restrictions on critical minerals.
The US-China trade war has intensified sharply, rattling financial markets. This follows President Donald Trump’s announcement of 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, adding to existing duties averaging 55%, in response to China’s expanded export controls on rare earth materials.
