President Donald Trump warned that countries maintaining digital taxes on major US tech firms such as Google and Amazon would face additional tariffs.

US President Donald Trump has threatened countries with additional tariffs if they do not remove digital taxes targeting US tech companies, including Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon, by 25 August 2025.

“With this TRUTH, I put all Countries with Digital Taxes, Legislation, Rules, or Regulations, on notice that unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as President of the United States, will impose substantial additional Tariffs on that Country’s Exports to the U.S.A., and institute Export restrictions on our Highly Protected Technology and Chips. America, and American Technology Companies, are neither the “piggy bank” nor the “doormat” of the World any longer. Show respect to America and our amazing Tech Companies, or consider the consequences!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump also criticised such taxes, particularly in Europe, as discriminatory against American technology while favouring Chinese firms. The Trump administration considered sanctions against EU officials involved in implementing the Digital Services Act.

Trump had previously threatened tariffs on nations like Canada and France over similar disputes. In February, he directed his trade chief to restart investigations to potentially impose tariffs on countries with digital service taxes targeting US tech companies.

Canada has cancelled its planned 3% digital services tax on US tech firms on 29 June 2025, just before its implementation, to revive stalled trade talks between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump.
