The Trump Administration is planning to cut billions from child care, health research, education, and housing programmes in its 2026 budget proposal, which is being finalised by the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, according to a New York Times report on Friday, 25 April 2025.
The White House could unveil the budget as early as next week. It is anticipated to introduce substantial cuts to HUD’s (Housing and Urban Development) essential affordable housing and homelessness assistance programmes. Among the proposed changes is a major overhaul of the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) programme, which could significantly reduce the number of households receiving support.
The HCV programme receives annual funding from Congress for voucher renewals, administrative costs, and creating new vouchers.
However, a spokesperson for the OMB (Office of Management and Budget) stated, “No final funding decisions have been made.”
Additionally, a separate proposal aimed at cutting over USD 9 billion in previously approved spending for the current fiscal year, including funding for media platforms PBS and NPR, which is also slated for release next week.
Since assuming office in January, Trump has aimed to reduce the size of the federal government. He repeatedly called for major cuts to HUD programmes, including the HCV programme.
Earlier this year, Congress passed a Republican budget plan for 2025 to cut billions in spending and extend expiring tax cuts.
