President Trump expressed confidence in reaching agreements with President Xi during their upcoming South Korea meeting, covering trade issues, including China’s Russian oil imports.
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his optimism on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, about reaching agreements with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their upcoming meeting in South Korea.
Trump mentioned potential deals ranging from China resuming soybean purchases to discussions. He also plans to address China’s purchases of Russian oil and strategies to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
The trade dispute with China has particularly impacted U.S. farmers, who have suffered from reduced Chinese soybean orders. Trump expressed confidence in resolving this issue with Xi.
Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer were en route to Asia to ensure the meeting stays on track. This comes amid heightened trade tensions between the U.S. and China, following China’s restrictions on rare earth exports and Trump’s announcement of 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, set to take effect on 1 November 2025.
The Trump administration is also reportedly considering new measures, including restricting software-related exports to China, as a response to Beijing’s actions.
