Trump announced new tariffs on Japan and Korea (Rep.), urging trade negotiations before 1 August.

US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all imports from Japan and Korea (Rep.) on 8 July 2025, due to take effect on 1 August. The tariffs are intended to tackle trade imbalances and protect American industries.

Formal letters were sent to the leaders of both countries to notify them of the decision.

“If for any reason you decide to raise your Tariffs, then, whatever the number you choose to raise them by, will be added onto the 25% that we charge,” Trump said in letters, released on his Truth Social platform, to Japan and South Korea.

Trump also extended the deadline for negotiations, giving Japan and South Korea a short window to reach new trade agreements that could prevent the tariffs from taking effect. He warned that any retaliatory measures from either country would be met with equivalent US tariffs.
