The IRS announced that, despite its limited operations during the ongoing US government shutdown, taxpayers are still required to meet all regular tax obligations.

The ongoing US federal government shutdown, which began on 1 October 2025, has become the longest in history, lasting 37 days as of 6 November 2025. The IRS is heavily impacted, with most staff furloughed and limited capacity to process returns, issue refunds, or assist taxpayers.

While essential functions continue, customer service, audits, and refund operations are mainly suspended. Tax obligations and filing deadlines remain unchanged; taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically to minimise delays.

Earlier, on 21 October 2025, the IRS announced that, despite its limited operations during the ongoing US government shutdown, taxpayers are still required to meet all regular tax obligations.
