The IRS has issued instructions for /US citizens or residents who are living or working abroad, and for people in the US receiving foreign income in 2013. All income of US citizens or residents must be declared to the IRS and the rules in respect of completing US tax returns are similar for those living in US or in other countries. They must declare their worldwide income including income arising from foreign trusts, bank accounts and securities accounts.
US citizens working abroad often have a heavy compliance burden as a result of the requirement to file a tax return in their country of residence in addition to making returns to the US. The IRS guidance may be of help in enabling them to deal with the tax compliance obligations more quickly. Taxpayers should also review the guidance to ensure that they are claiming all available tax relief.
Taxpayers may use IRS free file to prepare their federal tax returns and file them electronically. US taxpayers working abroad may also obtain help from staff at the IRS offices in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Beijing.
