The 17% duty on Mexican tomatoes was imposed after the US withdrew from a 2019 agreement that suspended an antidumping investigation on Mexican tomatoes.

The Trump administration announced a 17% duty on Mexican fresh tomato imports on 14 July 2025.

This comes after the US Department of Commerce revoked the 2019 export agreement, which had previously halted an antidumping investigation into Mexican tomatoes.

This decision, affecting USD 3 billion in Mexican tomato exports, is part of broader trade negotiations initiated by US President Donald Trump.

The US and Mexico had regulated tomato exports since 1996 to address unfair competition, with the last agreement renewal six years ago.

Earlier, Trump threatened a 30% tariff on all Mexican imports starting August 1 after failed trade negotiations.
