US to impose extra 25% tariffs on Indian imports from 27 August 2025, raising total duties to 50%.

The US’  tariffs on Indian imports under Executive Order 14329 is taking effect today, 27 August 2025, starting 12:01 AM EDT.

Most Indian products will face their normal import duties plus a 25% surcharge, bringing the total tariff up to 50%, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

The US has rolled out new tariff codes that define which goods are subject to the 25% duty, which are exempt, and which may receive temporary relief. Notably, Indian products entering US Foreign Trade Zones after the effective date must be classified under a special “privileged foreign status,” ensuring they remain subject to the new tariffs once released into the US market.

The increased US tariffs are in response to India’s high tariffs, trade barriers, ongoing defence and energy ties with Russia, as well as the country’s direct or indirect imports of Russian oil.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on 6 August 2025, adding additional tariffs on Indian goods.
