The UK tax authority, His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) announced on 6 March 2025 that it will shut down its free company filing software. This service allowed businesses and agents to submit company accounts and tax returns to both HMRC and Companies House.

From 1 April 2026, businesses will need to use commercial software to file their annual accounts and tax returns. The move aims to provide enhanced features, such as better validation, tax support, and timely reminders.

The free service, known as Company Accounts and Tax Online (CATO), will be phased out after 31 March 2026. HMRC explained that CATO no longer meets modern digital standards or reflects the latest updates in UK company law.

HMRC has provided links to software suppliers for filing company tax returns and managing company accounts. They also reminded businesses to download and save their returns for the past three years before the free service is shut down.
