Sweden has temporarily cut the VAT rate on food from 12% to 6% to ease household costs, effective from 1 April 2026 to 31 December 2027.
Sweden’s parliament (Riksdag) has approved the government’s proposal to temporarily reduce the value-added tax (VAT) rate on food from 12% to 6%.
This announcement was made on 25 February 2026.
The measure aims to ease household expenses and will apply from 1 April 2026 until 31 December 2027.
The Government said the reduction is part of broader efforts to support household finances amid rising living costs.
