South Africa has submitted a revised trade offer to the US on 12 August 2025 to seek a reduction of the 30% tariff imposed on its exports.
South Africa plans to present a revised trade proposal to the US to reduce the 30% tariff recently imposed on its exports, Trade Minister Parks Tau announced on 12 August 2025.
Officials have cautioned that the tariffs may put approximately 30,000 jobs at risk in an economy already facing an unemployment rate of 33.2%.
“Cabinet has authorised South Africa to submit an updated offer to serve as a foundation for talks with the US. Our goal is to demonstrate that South African exports do not pose a threat to US industries and that our trade relationship is, in fact, complementary.” Tau said at a press briefing.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 31 July 2025, imposing high tariffs on exports from several countries.
