New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has announced that Australia and New Zealand will begin a second round of talks in May 2025 to negotiate a new income tax agreement. The first round of discussions took place in May 2024.

This treaty aims to prevent double taxation and improve tax cooperation between the two countries.

A double tax agreement between Australia and New Zealand, to replace the existing 2009 agreement. The agreement will eliminate double taxation with respect to taxes on income without creating opportunities for non-taxation or reduced taxation through tax evasion or avoidance (including through treaty-shopping arrangements aimed at obtaining reliefs provided in this Convention for the indirect benefit of residents of third States).

If both countries reach an agreement, the new treaty will need to go through a formal process being finalized, signed, and approved by both governments before it can come into effect.
