Malaysia and the Maldives signed the income tax treaty on 24 May 2023.
Malaysia has ratified the Malaysia-Maldives Income Tax Treaty (2023) through the Double Taxation Relief (The Government of the Republic of Maldives) Order 2025, published in the Official Gazette PU (A) 183 on 18 June 2025.
Issued under the Income Tax Act 1967 and the Petroleum (Income Tax) Act 1967, this order enforces an agreement between Malaysia and the Maldives to eliminate double taxation and prevent tax evasion.
The agreement also defines taxation rights and reduces withholding tax rates on incomes such as dividends, interest, royalties, and technical service fees between the two countries.
Earlier, the governments of Malaysia and the Maldives signed the income tax treaty on 24 May 2023.
