According to the Tax Justice Network’s latest ranking report published on 1 October 2024, Ireland has surpassed the Bahamas to become the ninth-largest tax haven in the world.
A spokesperson for Ireland’s Department of Finance has denied that the country is a tax haven and reiterated that Ireland has implemented aggressive tax reforms aligned with international tax reforms.
This ranking follows Ireland’s collection of USD 14 billion in back taxes from US tech giant Apple after the European Court of Justice ruled the company’s preferential tax treatment in Ireland unlawful.
Ireland’s corporate tax revenues have surged, increasing from EUR 4.4 billion in 2015 to an estimated EUR 29.5 billion this year, excluding the Apple case. These revenues, mainly from US multinationals, account for 28% of Ireland’s annual tax intake.
Tax Justice Network, which advocates for tax transparency, placed Ireland at 11th place in its 2021 report.
