India has proposed a temporary 12% safeguard duty on certain steel products for 200 days, to protect its domestic industry from the surge in imports, on 19 March 2025.

The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) cited the influx of steel from China, South Korea and Japan, which has put pressure on Indian steel mills.

“The authority recommends imposition of provisional Safeguard Duty at the rate of 12% ad valorem for 200 days pending final determination on imports of the product under consideration,” the DGTR has said in a notification.

The DGTR has further invited comments on its findings within a 30-day period, after which an oral hearing will take place prior to reaching a final decision.
