The US ended its 1979 tax treaty with Hungary, effective 1 January 2024, while a 2010 treaty between the two was never ratified.

Representatives from Hungary and the US held discussions on strengthening bilateral relations on 17 October 2025. A key topic was the potential reinstatement of the tax treaty that had been terminated in July 2022.

Both nations reportedly agreed to initiate collaborative efforts at the expert level, aiming to restore the agreement in the near future.

Earlier, in July 2022, Washington unilaterally terminated the international treaty with Hungary, dating back to 1979, which went into effect on 1 January 2024.  In 2010, the two countries signed another tax treaty, but it was never ratified.
