A new regulation has been inserted into the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) agreement to incorporate changes already made under the EUā€™s Emissions Trading Scheme. The changes were originally put through by the EU in April 2013 to ensure that of international aviation from the scheme continued for a further year. The regulation was adopted by the EU on 16 April 2014.

The new rules also exempt small non-commercial aircraft businesses from the rules. This saves them from the compliance burden of operating the scheme. Simplified compliance rules apply for some medium sized businesses.
