El Salvador’s Ministry of Finance has introduced a new tax amnesty programme, enabling the settlement of outstanding tax and customs obligations without interest, surcharges, or fines.

The 2024 Tax Amnesty aims to assist insolvent taxpayers in settling their tax, customs, and other fines obligations. This initiative seeks to encourage voluntary compliance by offering debt relief without interest, surcharges, or fines.

Under the new programme, taxpayers in arrears with the General Directorate of Internal Revenue, the General Directorate of Customs, and the General Directorate of the Treasury will have 90 days to clear their debts. They can also opt for a payment plan of up to nine instalments, with the first instalment requiring a 10% premium on the total amount owed.

Additionally, Salvadorans facing fines under the Land Transportation, Traffic, and Road Safety Law will benefit from the removal of surcharges, although the original fine amounts will remain.

This amnesty covers tax returns or merchandise registered before 31 July 2024, allowing taxpayers to settle overdue returns or payments under the new terms.

The Amnesty was approved on 2 September 2024 and will come into effect upon its publication in the Official Gazette.
