The Czech Republic has approved legislation increasing the excise duty on cigarettes by CZK3-4 to bring its rates into line with EU law. It was prescribed that from January 1, 2014, the overall excise duty (excluding VAT) on cigarettes shall stand for at least 60% of the weighted average retail selling price of cigarettes free for consumption. Excise duty rates shall not be less than EUR90 (USD120.8) per 1,000 cigarettes and from 2018, minimum excise duty rates will again be increased.
