China has offered to sign an FTA with Bangladesh to boost trade between both countries and cut the trade gap. This offer was made at the bilateral talks between both countries at the Foreign Ministry.
“China wants to begin negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement. We will explore the proposal” M Shahidul Haque, the Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh told reporters after the meeting.
Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that the People’s Republic of China is ready to settle talks towards the signature of a bilateral FTA with Bangladesh at an early date at a recent meeting held in Dhaka.
The talks mostly covered a variety of bilateral issues, including development of bilateral trade and business, connectivity particularly in railway and road sectors, expanding collaboration in industrial and energy sectors and celebration of forty years of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and China.
Bangladesh’s Government did not immediately accept China’s proposal. This agreement if completed would however be the first bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) for Bangladesh.
