Brazil’s Senate approved the ratification of the pending protocol to the 1975 income tax treaty with Sweden on 23 April 2025.
Signed on 19 March 2019, the protocol updates the treaty to meet minimum BEPS standards and introduces other changes. The income tax treaty focuses on facilitating the exchange of information while addressing key issues such as preventing double taxation and combating tax evasion, and tax avoidance.
The protocol to the treaty will take effect 30 days after the exchange of ratification instruments and will apply from 1 January of the following year.
Earlier, Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies approved an amending protocol with Sweden on 26 November 2024.
