GECEX has restored tariffs on some IT products and cut import duties to zero for certain capital goods under the ex-tarifário scheme, taking effect immediately.

Brazil’s Executive Committee of Foreign Commerce (GECEX) has partially reversed recent import duty hikes with the publication of Resolution No. 866 on 27 February 2026. The resolution restores the import tariff on 15 IT products, including smartphones and notebooks, to 16% instead of the planned 20% increase.

At the same time, tariffs for 105 capital goods and IT/telecommunications items were reduced to zero under the ex-tarifário mechanism, which applies when there is no equivalent domestic production. The decision follows the 1st Extraordinary Meeting of 2026 and complies with Decree No. 11,428 and Mercosur Common Market Council rules.

The resolution covers industrial components like air conditioner compressors and microfans, as well as machinery such as cotton harvesters, advanced weaving machines, and automated sock-making equipment. Medical and technical devices are also included, including fibre laser welding machines and AI-assisted ultrasound machines.

This Resolution took effect immediately, balancing support for the domestic industry with efforts to limit the impact on consumer prices.

Earlier, Brazil’s GECEX raised import duties on capital goods, IT, and telecom products, while allowing temporary duty reductions for certain items under specific conditions.
